질석(Vermiculite)
“질석(Vermiculite)”는 스마트팜 분야에서 사용되는 용어로, 운모를 고온(약 700℃)에서 가열하여 체적이 15~20배로 팽창된 물질을 말합니다. 이 과정으로 생긴 경량의 입자 구조는 특정 특성을 가지며, 토양 개량재료나 배지 구성 요소로 사용됩니다.
질석은 다른 암석에서 파생된 배지와 비교하여 특정 특성을 가지는데, 보존력, 통기성, 배수성 및 양이온 치환용량이 높습니다. 따라서 작물의 뿌리가 효과적으로 확장하고 생장에 필요한 수분과 영양분을 흡수할 수 있는 환경을 제공하는데 유용합니다.
그러나 질석은 입자가 가볍고 부서지기 쉽다는 특성을 가지기 때문에 배지로 사용할 때 주의가 필요합니다. 입자가 파편으로 부서지면 배지 내 공극률이 감소하여 투수성이 저하될 수 있습니다.
스마트팜에서는 이러한 특성을 고려하여 질석을 포함한 배지를 조절하여 작물의 생장 환경을 최적화하고 생산성을 향상시키는 데 활용됩니다.

“Vermiculite” is a term used in the field of smart farming to refer to a material that is created by heating and expanding vermiculite ore at high temperatures (approximately 700°C), causing its volume to expand by 15 to 20 times. The resulting lightweight particle structure possesses specific characteristics, making it a valuable component in soil amendments and growing media.
Vermiculite exhibits distinct properties compared to growing media derived from other minerals. It boasts high retention capacity, porosity, drainage, and cation exchange capacity, providing an environment conducive for effective root expansion and the absorption of necessary moisture and nutrients for plant growth.
However, it’s worth noting that due to its lightweight and fragile nature, vermiculite should be handled with care when used as a growing medium component. If particles break into fragments, the porosity within the medium can decrease, leading to compromised water-holding capacity.
In smart farming, these properties are taken into consideration when incorporating vermiculite into growing media, aiming to optimize the plant’s growth environment and enhance overall productivity.
