ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange)은 1960년대에 미국에서 문자를 숫자로 표현하기 위해 개발된 표준 코드입니다. 이 코드는 0부터 127까지의 십진수에 해당하는 각 문자를 정의하여 컴퓨터, 통신 장비 등에서 사용됩니다. ASCII 코드는 128개의 문자를 나타내기 위해 7비트가 필요하며 (2^7 = 128), 제어 문자 33개(공백 포함)와 출력 가능한 문자 95개로 구성되어 있습니다. 2007년 12월까지 ASCII 코드로부터 파생된 UTF-8이 널리 사용되기 전까지 월드 와이드 웹에서 가장 많이 사용된 문자 인코딩 방식 중 하나였습니다.
